State Epidemiologist
How to Enter This Career
Epidemiologists are described as the very core and foundation of public health. They strive to study and research patterns and health events to learn their causes. This enables us to have a better understanding of risk factors and how to best target these characteristics to create preventive medicine. Most positions require a master’s degree from an accredited public health school, but there are research jobs that may require either a PhD or even a medical degree, depending on the nature of the work. These programs usually have a lot of coursework in:
- Biology
- Math
- Chemistry
- Statistics
Daily Duties of a State Epidemiologist
Epidemiologists study the cause and spread of diseases; this research enables them to prevent future outbreaks. On the state level, epidemiologists work for health agencies controlling and containing any outbreaks. Epidemiologists are sometimes referred to as “the disease detectives” because essentially, that is what they’re doing. They run population studies, determine how diseases are spread and distributed, and test various hypotheses in order to protect the public health.
Earning Power and Job Outlook
According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), this field is projected to grow faster than average, as we have a heightened awareness of bioterrorism as well as infectious diseases. Dealing with diseases, such as West Nile Virus and the Avian flu, will increase the need for professionals in the field. The median salary for epidemiologists, as reported by the BLS, was $61,360 in 2008.
