MBA in Health Services Administration

A Master of Business Administration (MBA) in health services administration gives students a background in business, while still focusing their education on healthcare. This degree is comparable to a master of health administration (MHA). The difference is that students learn general business skills unrelated to health services. Students take MBA courses, and then move on to health services administration classes with others also interested in this industry.

My Degree and What It’s Good For

With an MBA in health service administration, students have a strong foundation in business administration. So, if students decide to work in another area of business, they can easily transition to a new field, rather than have to go back to school and start from scratch. While the curriculum may not be as specialized to the health services industry as students would get with a master of health administration, with the MBA’s concentration in health service administration, they still are prepared to work in this field.

The classes students take as part of an MBA in health service administration program covers topics such as:

finance and accounting
management
health informatics
public relations
leadership, and ethics

Students may also take some classes dealing with health service laws, since as an administrator in this field, they are responsible for ensuring that the facility runs according to state and federal regulations.

Medical and health services managers earned a mean annual wage of $93,670 in 2010, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics. With an MBA, graduates qualify to work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, government agencies, colleges and universities, and many other industries.

Most MBA programs last about two years. Students need to have at least a bachelor’s degree in a related field already in order to apply to one of these programs, though they can also take MBA in health service administration classes as a nurse or doctor, so some MBA students already have a master’s degree or doctorate degree. Depending on the program, students may also need to have work experience in the health service field.
