MBA/MPH Dual Degree
If students are interested in an administrative position in healthcare, one advanced degree option they can consider is a dual MBA and MPH degree. An MBA, or Master of Business Administration, gives students the background they need to successfully complete business-related tasks in their job. On the other hand, the MPH, or Master of Public Health, degree teaches students more about healthcare. Together, these degrees prepare students for a variety of administrative positions in health-related facilities or companies.
My Degree and What It’s Good For
MBA and MPH programs go hand in hand because there is an overlap of courses with these programs. Both teach students leadership skills in a business environment and cover topics such as ethics and communications. However, this is not a simple matter of a few courses being different. An MBA degree is very different from an MPH, so students end up being in school longer overall. Usually, an MBA program only takes about two years to complete, but adding an MPH means students spend about three years in school (or longer).
In order to get a dual MBA/MPH degree, students need to have relevant work experience in this field. Some master’s degree programs simply require that students have their bachelor’s degree, but they can apply directly after they graduate. This is not the case from most MBA programs, including those that allow students to get an MPH at the same time; however, working in the field before students get their MBA/MPH degree can actually be beneficial, especially when it comes to paying for college. Many employers have tuition assistance programs set up to help their employees get advanced degrees. Some also have grants or scholarships available to employees.
While students can get an MBA in healthcare or an MPH in administration, getting the dual degree qualifies them equally in business administration and public health. Being prepared in both of these career fields means that students qualify for more careers and higher-paid positions.
My Earning Potential
Professionals working in public health work to improve the health and quality of life of entire communities and areas. Whereas a public health social worker deals with individuals and families, public health manager and administrators deal with larger groups of people. For students more geared toward working in the healthcare field, some of the average salaries you can expect to earn are:
- hospitals: $54,550
- nursing care facilities: $43,890
- local government: $46,800
- outpatient centers: $49,600
- schools: $55,070 – $55,150
These are just a few facilities that The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides data for. Students who go the route of the combined MBA/MPH put themselves in a better position to qualify for higher-paying jobs, given that their education pertain to business administration and public health. This makes them more marketable to employers in many different fields.
