MPH in Dental Health
Workers in public health are needed in every sector of health care, including outside of hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. The world of dental health has a number of jobs available for those who get a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, working in many of the same roles as general public health workers, but with a dental health spin.
My Degree and What It’s Good For
If students enter an MPH in dental health program, they still cover the six main areas of public health: biostatistics, epidemiology, health service administration, health education, behavioral science, and environmental science. Students also take classes intended to prepare them for a career in the dental world. Students with an interest in dentistry might confront such issues as:
- What are the most preventable dental care problems?
- How can we teach the public about dental health?
- What research is being done to improve the general dental health of the population in this country?
- How does a person’s environment affect dental health?
- What can be done to change people’s approach to public health?
Courses prepare students to assume advanced roles in the public health world, serving as an educator, administrator, manager, or representative. In addition, students work as a consultant for dental health facilities, working with them increase public dental health awareness and research new techniques for preventing dental health problems.
My Earning Potential
While dentists are not necessarily considered public health workers, their work contributes to overall public health efforts. Public health work incorporates dozens of professions, from treatment providers to educators, social workers, and lawmakers, so it is difficult to pin down an average salary for the industry. Median annual earnings for a few relevant career paths according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics are as follows:
- Dentists: $142,870
- Health Educators: $44,000
- Dental Hygienists: $66,570
Most MPH in dental health programs last about two years, though students can also choose to go to school over the course of several years on a part-time basis. Some programs require that students have background knowledge in dental health or general public health. Others require that students are certified or have work experience in a public health setting. Program requirements vary by college, so check with each school before applying in order to meet their entrance criteria.
