MPH in Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of how diseases enter and spread throughout a population. Using statistical analysis and empirical evidence, epidemiologists can identify risk factors for disease in communities, and devise strategies for mitigating outbreaks. Students of epidemiology work in fields such as:
- statistical data analysis
- disease prevention
- research
- disaster management
Working in the field of epidemiology is also great if students are interested in history, as studying the past in comparison to the present is extremely important.
My Degree and What It’s Good For
Once students graduate with an MPH in epidemiology, they can work for many different kinds of employers, like clinics and research laboratories. The government also funds a number of organizations that hire those to work in the field of epidemiology, so students can find a job with the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, or another related group. Students work with epidemiology on a small level, studying the health of a city or state population, or they can work on a much larger level, dealing with the health of the entire world.
MPH programs, whether they have an epidemiology concentration or another type of concentration, typically take about two years to complete if students go to school full time. Students can also choose to attend school part time while they work in the field of public health, and online programs are a great option for this, as they can go to school on a flexible schedule. If students continue to work as they go to school, they may also be eligible for tuition assistance programs through their employer, grants and other forms of financial aid, which means they can go to school for free.
My Earning Potential
Epidemiologists earn a median annual wage of $61,360, as of May 2008, according to data gathered by The Bureau of Labor Statistics. Increasing fear of biological warfare and superstrains of common viruses and bacteria have led to heightened public awareness of epidemics, and greater demand for people who know how to confront these problems. Employment for epidemiologists is expected to rise faster than average over the next few years.
